Supermarket vs Market Stall

The Market in the nearby town here has had a complete revamp. It’s been moved to a much larger building and has doubled if not tripled in size. Yesterday we took a wander in there to see what was new and whether there was anything worthwhile. We found a new fruit and veg stall that hadn’t been in the old market and I have to say I’ll be returning there to buy my fruit and veg in the future. We picked up 2 large bags full of fruit and veg for less than £10 – something that would have easily cost around £20 in the supermarket, and most likely not as fresh as from the market.

Unfortunately the Farmer’s market that was meant to be on wasn’t to be found, however with just 4-5 stalls I doubt there was much to it anyhow. But being able to buy fresh produce straight from the market is something I’ve missed whilst we’ve had no proper fruit and veg shop or market stall previously in the area, and at half the price of the supermarkets then I can see us happily buying from there in the future.

  1. I have to agree with you, it’s so much nicer buying fruit & veg from a market or even a proper green grocer, than from the supermarket. I lived in France for a year and I went to my local open air market every sunday to buy my week’s fruit & veg. When I got back here, I really missed doing my shopping that way. Now at least we have a local farmers market but it’s only once a month :(

  2. That fruit and veg lasted us a whole week and tasted so good. It’s funny you mentioned France as we spent last weekend in Paris for a long break away and happened to find a market on the Sunday morning. I was just amazed at the size of it and the stalls selling fresh fish, meat, tonnes of fruit and veg and one even selling bunches of fresh herbs!

It’s a shame we don’t have more of those in this country. Clearly people come in from the countryside and selling within the big city on the sunday. A perfect way to spend sunday morning in my opinion. It’s just a shame we couldn’t buy anything to bring back.
