Fresh vs Packet

Penne Pasta After getting back home last weekend I ran through the freezer to see what needed eating before we go for a big shop to stock up again. I found a pack of mince so last night I cooked up a Bolognaise, adding in diced onion, spring onion, mushrooms, diced pepper and a couple of fresh deseeded chilli peppers plus a couple of crushed seeds (more than enough spice!).

I then took this mixture and filled some mini cannelloni tubes that we picked up from an Italian shop a few weeks back. I topped this with a thick cheese sauce and put in the oven for 30 minutes (so similar to Lasagne but lots of healthy veg and less cheese sauce).

Anyhow, we had dinner and got through about 2/3rds of what was cooked. So tonight after forgetting to get the chicken out of the freezer I decided to cook up a mish mash or what we had available. Some boiled potatoes and cauliflower from Sunday dinner - simply sliced and sauted the potatoes and then put them in a bowl with the cauliflower and covered with cheese sauce to go in the oven. I also cooked up some extra veg to go with it and of course put the pasta back in the oven. At the same time I wasn’t sure if there was enough for the three of us so I took a pack of cheese and tomato tortellini that was in the fridge, shop bought. I boiled this up at the same time and there was a feast of everything.

Usually we’ll get some Tortellini to have at lunch time adding a plain tomato sauce or pesto. However side by side with a fresh, home made pasta meal the Tortellini was… terrible! It really stood out as the processed food compared to everything else on the plate. It’s times like this that remind me how good fresh home cooked food really is!
