Hey Doug,

I can't tell you about growing Olives. We bought an olive tree from the garden centre for my Dad. It's been out in the direct sunlight every day, and is growing new leaves. Whether it will produce the olives or not I don't know however it won't be planted into the ground until my parents move which will be in a couple of years I guess.

I'd go down to your local garden centre and see what you can pick up there :) You may have more luck with your climate :)

Hey John,

Thanks for your comment. Absolutely perfect timing as I bought my Dad an Olive tree yesterday at the garden centre. It's about 2-3 feet tall at present. It was actually the smallest I could get! Just got to keep it going until my Dad visits next month, a month early on his birthday but I'm sure he won't mind!

Have you had any Olives off it yet or am I being too ambitious? I read up on cultivation for it last night and found that it's frost hardy but needs Mediteranean climates to produce anything. Mind you, our summers often feel a bit Med these days! Am putting it out in the sun during the day and bringing it in to the kitchen at night. I'm sure if anyone can make it work it's my Dad!

You need too many olives, and it's probably too much hassle! Plus to be honest, I'm not a fan of olive oil. I prefer Avocado or Grapeseed, not as pungent.

However I will be looking for an olive tree again for my Dad's birthday this year.

How strange, I also didn't develop a taste for olives until my twenties!

I wonder if it's anything to do with the subtle flavours?

I also never cared for avocados, but now I really enjoy them especially with some blue cheese.

Sarah - rather than eating the olives, how about making olive oil?

You can buy them in this country, may not get as big as normal Olive trees, perhaps a more bonsai affair, but they will grow. However my Dad has an insulated Greenhouse, Shed with a Greenhouse etc. And heck, if he can manage to grow Nectarines the size he does then I'm sure an Olive tree will work! But we'll see :)

Am off to the local big garden centre tomorrow so I'll have a look there and see if they sell any.

Have to say however, I can't ever see me liking them to eat them. Guess I'm not old enough ;)

Will an olive tree grow over here ? I suppose global warming might come to your rescue. Funny, I never used to like olives but I reached a certain age (I'm sure it was 29) and suddenly I quite like them.
