Chester Farmer’s Market

Vegetable Stall We went down to Chester today for the monthly regional Farmer’s market. I’ve actually been waiting to go to this since I found out about it in September! Due to various reasons I’ve not been in the area for the first Wednesday of the month for both October and November.

Anyhow, we found the market but I’m not sure if there were less stalls due to the bad weather. I’d read that there were usually around 30 stalls however I saw around 20 there. Still 20 was enough with the variety they had. The first thing you could smell was a stall selling freshly cooked burgers which smelt absolutely gorgeous. At the time I could smell it but I couldn’t see where the cooking was being done otherwise I’d have had a burger! A lot of the stalls were offering taste tests as well. The stalls I can remember were selling: Fish, Beef (steak and burgers - both cooked and uncooked), cakes and cake/cookie mixes, chocolate truffles, fruit and vegetables, various meats, ‘free from’ foods (gluten, wheat free etc) and a wine/cider stall.

The cake stall were cooking Welsh Cakes (like flat scones but more dense and moist) and also offering a taste of them. Living in Wales for over 5 years I’ve eaten my fair share of Welsh cakes and really like them and to have them freshly cooked was great. All I needed was a good hot chocolate to go with them! They also had large jars of mixes ready to make and looked like great presents. We bought some of the uncooked burgers and will be cooking them tomorrow night so I’ll let you know how they taste. If the smell of the cooked ones is anything to go by they’ll be great :) I also bought a couple of bottles of real cider for my Dad. He enjoys cider and he prefers the ‘proper stuff’ which this stall had. So that’ll make a nice suprise for him when I see him next.

Despite wanting to buy stuff, because we took the bus down and still had shopping to do we chose not to buy too much. The market is back in February as the date for January is moved forward to just before Christmas. So in February we’ll go back down with the car and park close by so that we can buy some decent meats and fruit/veg and get it back home in a fresh state. All I can say is that it’s a shame it’s not there more often! I’ll have to find another one for the middle of the month too :)

  1. [...] I also got a jar of the dry ingredients for making double chocolate chip muffins off Dave’s neice Ashleigh who had come with us to the Farmer’s Market in Chester at the start of December and bought the jar from there. A good idea (I mean the jar, but it’s a good idea as a present for me too!!) as the jar is quite decorative but just needs some basic extras such as egg, water, butter to make the muffins. Can’t wait to have a go with those! [...]
