Get Composting!

Compost Bin I’ve always known about composting as my Dad has always made his own compost. When I was younger I assumed he did this to save money on buying it. I knew he used it in his garden and his allotment for growing his fruit and veg, and it makes sense if you can make your own.

Last summer Dave suggested to get a Compost bin but at the time we had no space for it. However this year, with the brambles and hedge cut back, we’ve opened up the back corner of the garden and I realised the other week that a compost bin would fit nicely in there. After looking online at the D.I.Y. sites I came across our own Cheshire County Council selling bargin bins, part of the scheme to reduce waste and get people composting. Apparently a lot of councils offer these deals so if you’re interested then I’d recommend searching on Recycle Now to see what’s on offer in your area.

So, our compost bin arrived on Wednesday and I got it into its new home in the garden on Thursday. We got the largest bin we could along with a kitchen caddy to keep indoors which seems to get full very quick from us! We try and eat a lot of fruit, plus we were away for 5 days so a few things had gone past their best which got thrown in too.

So what goes into a compost bin? Fruit and vegetable peelings (but orange and lemons and their peelings is not a good idea because of the acid), egg shells, grass cuttings, leaves, most weeds (but not dandelions), newspaper and non printed cardboard eg. toilet roll inserts and egg boxes. A lot of salad items come in compostable containers these days too.

I’m still learning however, courtesey of my Dad, however for further reading there’s also the Composting Association.
