Review: The Black Dog, Chester, Cheshire

We’ve stopped at The Black Dog Pub Restaurant a couple of times now for dinner. The first was due to the amount of time we’d already been in the car and not knowing how far from home we were we agreed to stop at the next pub/restaurant for dinner and a rest, especially after being stuck in miles of crawling traffic. Little did we know we were 20 minutes from home!

Then the other week we were passing by again and decided to stop for dinner as it was getting late and we didn’t fancy cooking once we were home!

The pub itself is not really very pub like and is mainly occupied with tables. It’s a nice size inside with plenty of space for a fair few people. I’m sure they’re busier on a Friday or Saturday evening, we’ve only been there during the week however.

Both times I’ve had Pate and toast to start with and then a 12oz Rump Steak with pepper sauce for main course, and both times it’s been perfect. You’re not kept waiting long for your food, it’s cooked perfectly and we’ve had no complaints yet. Dave has had steak both times too. He has it Medium-Rare and I prefer Medium, both of which have come out perfect both times.

I did have a dessert the first time which was good from what I remember, shame it came with artifical cream and not the real stuff. That, to be honest, has been the only let down of the place.

So if you’re on the A41 and in the Chester area, a visit to this pub is not a bad choice. It’s affordable, pleasant, quiet and the food tastes great.

  1. There’s a restaurant pub less than 5 miles away that I’d recommend; it’s the Headless Woman. Don’t know how they arrived at that name, but the food is good. Proper restaurant/pub split.

My brother-in-law used to live virtually across the road from there so we visited it a couple of times. Great chips!

  2. Ahh we pass that on the other route to the M6 along the A49/A51 route. I have fancied stopping there for food but we only usually pass by on the way down South or coming back and so are either in a rush to get to the destination or to get home!

Will have to stop there one day :)
